چکیده
Abstract. Antarctic sea ice is an important component of the Earth system. However, its role in system still unclear due to limited sea-ice thickness (SIT) data. A reliable reanalysis can be useful study SIT and Among various products, Global Ice-Ocean Modeling Assimilation System (GIOMAS) output widely used research ice. As more observations with quality control are being released, a further evaluation from GIOMAS conducted this based on situ satellite observations. Generally, though only concentration assimilated, basically reproduce observed variability volume changes trend before after 2013, indicating that good option long-term variation deficiencies model asymmetric caused by assimilation, underestimates especially deformed regions, which has impact not mean state but also variability. Thus, besides development model, assimilating additional (e.g., drift) advanced assimilation methods may conducive accurate estimation SIT.

Satellite observations of Antarctic sea ice thickness and volume
We utilize satellite laser altimetry data from ICESat combined with passive microwave measurements to analyze basin-wide changes in Antarctic sea ice thickness and volume over a 5 year period from 2003-2008. Sea ice thickness exhibits a small negative trend while area increases in the summer and fall balanced losses in thickness leading to small overall volume changes. Using a five year time-se...
متن کاملSatellite Microwave Radar Observations of Antarctic Sea Ice
Since 1991, the European Space Agency’s two ERS satellites have acquired microwave radar data of Antarctica. ERS data have been recorded by two receiving stations, one German, one Japanese. The former has allowed direct downlink and recording of high bit-rate, high resolution SAR image data of the Weddell and Bellingshausen Seas during station campaigns. The latter has enabled some data from th...
متن کاملModeling sea ice thickness
In this paper, we present a self contained review on the modeling of sea ice thickness distribution. This is an important quantity arising and contributing to global climate changes. We present the various pde describing it, which are strongly non linear. Detailed mathematical analysis will be reported elsewhere. The utility of this quantity is of course to set up a global analysis of sea, ice ...
متن کاملAssimilation of ice and water observations from SAR imagery to improve estimates of sea ice concentration
In this paper the assimilation of binary observations calculated from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images of sea ice is investigated. Ice and water observations are obtained from a set of SAR images by thresholding ice and water probabilities calculated using a supervised maximum likelihood estimator (MLE). These ice and water observations are then assimilated in combination with ice concentr...
متن کاملDevelopment of sea-ice thickness algorithm from PALSAR data, combined with in-situ observations and other satellite data
In order to estimate the sea-ice thickness distribution in the seasonal ice zone (SIZ), we are developing the algorithm with PALSAR data. As a preliminary step, airborne Polarimetric and Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (Pi-SAR) observation, conducted in the southern Sea of Okhotsk in February 2005, was examined to validate the retrieval of ice thickness distribution from L-band SAR. In...
